National Artist for Visual Arts (1976)

He helped shape the local sculpture to what it is now through working in both representational and abstract styles while skillfully using a wide range of materials, from native hardwoods to metal, marble, and bronze.

He was also named the "Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture".
